  • Is it safe to drink coffee during pregnancy?

Yes, you can still enjoy a mug of coffee every now and then during your pregnancy. Just make sure that you don’t have more than 200mg of caffeine in a day. That means you can have up to two mugs of instant coffee or one mug of filter coffee made at home (FSA 2023, NHS 2023).

Coffee made from ground coffee or bought from a high street coffee shop can be much higher in caffeine though, so be careful. Find out how much caffeine is in your favourite barista coffee before ordering.

    How can coffee affect pregnancy?

Coffee is naturally high in caffeine, unless it’s decaffeinated.

If you regularly have more than 200mg of caffeine a day while you’re pregnant, you’ll have a higher risk of having a baby with a low birth weight (Poole et al 2017, RCOG 2022).

What happens when you drink too much caffeine while pregnant

Sadly, going over the limit also increases your chances of having a miscarriage, stillbirth or preterm birth later in pregnancy (Jafari et al 2022, Poole et al 2017, RCOG 2022). The risk is still low so don’t worry if you’ve already had caffeine in pregnancy.

Just keep an eye on the amount
